 wuauclt.exe is part of windows,but according to this link it is possible that it is a virus.

Have you run any scans?

 

Try scanning with your AV in safe mode.

 

You could try trend micro on line scanner also.

You also mention that you cleaned the registry,maybe you deleted this file by mistake.

I downloaded the program and scanned and cleaned but I still have this unwanted "houseguest".

What do you mean- scan my AV in safe mode?

I am unable to download updates from microsoft so I suspect this was  once a useful and necessary part of my operating system.

Anymore ideas?
