Error message

My Grandsons computer Dell2350 cpu 2.2 512 memory has a problem ,on boot up, we get an error message rundll error loading doceoc16b1 the specified module cannot be found, and then another message comes up and says the same thing about this (gktryme.exe). After boot up every thing seems normal except when he goes on the internet He can't go to any url  just the home page..You can type in the url but that familar message comes up about not being able to locate the url. He has the reinstalling dell tools system software disk , would that be of any help , or does it look like the computer needs to be reformated, We hate to do that because of so many school projects he has on the computer. He has Norton anti virus also norton's ghost I was thinking of getting rid of both of them. Any one have any ideas as to what is the problem ?. Thanking you in advance for all your help.                                     Bob Moyer

If not already done & just in case, suggest you use HJT.

Meanwhile, since it happens during windows boot stage, then use:

Start > Run > type in msconfig then click on Startup tab

Look at Command entries for each Startup Item

Identify any Startup Item with a Command entry that has rundll32.exe (used to load the dll causing error)

Can you post relevant rundll32.exe Command entries found?

I have no idea what it is but I found this info while searching around. Maybe it might help a bit...

it sounds like the problem is that some antimalware-program has removed some malware from the computer, but that the regkeys that cause the malware to run are left-behind, and so, when windows tries to run the malware, you are seeing the errors because the malware-files have been removed..

one of the other posters had a good idea.. go to start/run and type "msconfig" and then click "OK" to open "msconfig".. then, on the "startup" panel in "msconfig", uncheck the two items that are generating the error messages.. that is not the best way to handle those items, but it works..

there may also be a problem with "winsock".. to repair "winsock", go to "start"/"run" and type "cmd", and then click "OK" to open the "command prompt".. then, in the "command prompt", type:

"netsh winsock reset catalog"  (minus quotations)

if that doesn't fix things i would check to see if there is some malware (like viruses, trojans, rootkits, etc) that is causing problems..
