Have you had a virus in the past that you cleaned up? The only reference I get to it, is its part of a virus. I ask because you stated you ran your virus scanner and you didnt report any findings. Do a search for rasautou.exe at
www.google.com and read over what is said in some of the results. Kip
Symantec doesn't have this listed as a virus. You can uncheck it in msconfig Startup tab or just remove it from the Run key if you are comfortable & careful with editing the Registry. Look under this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Just delete that entry from the entries in the righthand column. Be careful to not change anything in the left column. You should mark this Run key as a Favorite in the Registry editor.
From what I've read on a french forum, rasauto.exe is not a virus or malware, it is a Microsoft autodialler, used by things like automatic update. Rasauto.exe is in my System32 folder and also in the I386 folder, so it is a legitimate XP file. Since you say the message occurs, not when Windows loads, but later, then it will probabvly not be in the startup list either.
The suggestion is to disable automatic updates service. click start, run, type services.msc, In the right pane, double click on Automatic updates, click stop, in the startup type dropdown box select disabled, click apply, OK.
If that resolves the problem, you can still update Windows manually by going to the Windows update site every so often.
Another suggestion is to uncheck the box 'redial if the connection is dropped': control panel, network connections, right click on the dial up connection (or whatever connection you use), properties, option tab.

Thanks for the advice, guys. It turns out that the problem was in my SBC/yahoo dial-up program. I checked run-msconfig, and unchecked the "remote access connection" boxes under the "services" tab, and SBC/yahoo would not connect anymore. So I un-installed and re-installed SBC/yahoo dial, re-checked the "remote access connection" boxes, and everything works fine. I do appreciate the help- I received several responses suggested I look in msconfig. Y'all are GREAT!!
