You might try the F8 factory recovery, it might fix the problem.

no luck w/ any of that, still says the service isnt running, but under services it states its started.

theres to many random errors for it to be any specific feature, im just at a loss.

helpslip,

Insert the drivers disk and restart the computer. Run the full diagnostics and report back any error messages.

tom, thanks for the input, its my understanding thats basicly what i did after installing the new hard drive.

we didnt recieve discs w/ the laptop so on the 1st startup when it poped up the "datasafe" make backup/restore disc we did, they are what i used after putting in the HD 3 days ago, i put in those discs; chose restore all partitions to factory & thats where im at now........ unable to get win7 to update, install/run programs like security essentials & defender & turn on system restore, among other things.....

the above was in response to toms suggestion

(sorry im just getting used to this forum system & havent figured out how exactly how it posts & how to edit)

in response to rockstar rick: i dont have a "drivers disc" but i ran the memory/hardware diagnostic off my "datasafe system backup/restore" discs (the ones mentioned above) & didnt show any errors.

i did notice when trying to turn on system restore (system properties>system protection>protection settings) under available drives it has 2 "OS (C:)" 1 says (system) & 1 says (missing).

when i try to edit the settings the error says "the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect. (0x8007007B).  i feel like there is something i need to do to the HD since thats what was replaced but cant figure out what. ive heard of issues w/ new HD installs& the old intel storage manager on dells but only if the HD size changes, mines the same as orig just 7200rpm instead of 5400......

helpslip,

The drivers disk should have come with the computer. Something sounds like it may not installed properly.

thanks rick,

ive put the request in, hopefully that will offer some help.

i agree something doesnt seem installed properly or permissions are amiss.

i have an old set of orig. xp discs that i may use if no solution presents itself, seems like a drag to have to go that route tho.

thanks again!
