Errors on Log in

I am currently running a Dell Dimension 8300 with Windows XP Professional 2002 SP2.

A few months ago my computer received a link via a message sent by one of my contacts on MSN Messenger. The link had my e-mail address in it, so out of curiosity, I clicked. The link turned out to be a program, and upon opening it my system received a virus (I suspected to be a trojan). The computer froze and flashed for a few moments, then returned to "normal". After scanning and deleting the virus, the system seemed to be clean.

What worried me more, however, even after getting rid of the virus, was the message that popped up just after the virus was received. It said something to the effect of, "certain Windows files have been replaced with unknown files. Insert the Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD immediately to repair them." Since I downloaded our Service Pack 2, I do not have the CD, so I was forced to click "Cancel".

Ever since I've been having problems with the computer's speed, Internet speed, and more predominantly, error messages I receive when I sign onto my name from the Windows startup menu. The other users sometimes receive the same alerts/errors when they sign onto their individual names.

I get a total of 4 alerts/errors, but after watching closely I realized the same 2 are coming up twice. They read:

"Windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\pudqkravtg\csrss.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then Search."

and

"Could not load or run 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\pudqkravtg\csrss.exe' specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry."

I tried putting in the Windows XP disk to see if there was any way to "restore" or "repair" these files, but I couldn't do much since my computer is running a more current operating system then that on the disk (I assume because of the service packs).

Right now I'm at a loss of what to do. I've considered backing up my necessary files and doing a complete wipe-out and reinstall to the hard drive, but I'd rather see if there is a less painstaking alternative to fix the problem.

Thanks.

tyguy8983,

I will assume that you have done a thorough scan of your system using your antivirus program with current virus signatures. Do you routinely scan for spyware? If not, download Ad-aware from here, Spybot from here and Microsoft AntiSpyware from here. Check online for updates to their databases then run them and delete all the spyware they identify.

If after you have done that you still get the prompt for the "missing" file the safest course of action is to back up your perishable data and do a clean install of XP. The folder pudqkravtg is not a legitimate folder.
