ERROR/USB

Hi,

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 that came with XP Pro Installed with two usb ports

I did a disk check and defrag  and then a day or two later a text balloon comes up from my task bar saying that my scanner is malfunctioning.

As a elimination process I decided to switch ports with my scanner and printer. These are the only two periphials that I use.

Only to have neither the printer or scanner being seen by my computer.  So I put the printer back to the original usb for the printer and still not recognized and will not work.

It just says two unknown devices.

So I uninstalled my scanner software and unplugged it hoping to be able to reinstall it.  I unplugged my scanner and shut off the computer.  I plugged it back in and turned the computer back on and there was no indication that my computer realized that new hardware was attached.

I am guessing that the problem is with the usb ports as it is highly unlikely that both would quit working at the same time.

They (scanner, printer)are getting power and lights are on.

I tried a system restore back to a time when I knew my printer was working.  This did not help.  So I undid it.

I do not want to reinstall worried about my data, etc. and also seems to be a difficulty to reinstall when Dell did a factory install.

I have heard of repair installs, however, I saw nothing like that in my Dell or XP manual that came with my computer.  I got it about 1 1/2 years ago and perhpaps that was not an option then.

ps. device mgr shows

two inter(r) 8280 1ba universal host controller - 2442

""                           ""                         ""               -2444

unknown device

unknown device

usb root hub

usb root hub

When I click on properties it says no drivers for this device.  The printer has the same drivers it has about a week ago and it printed fine.  The scanner I uninstalled everything and got updated drivers.. so I think I have eliminated the driver issue.  I dont know where to go from here.

Any and all help would be appreciated.  Please feel free to email me at SusieQoooo@aol.com

I am disabled and do not have the money to take it to a repair place so any and all help would be appreciated.

When you install a USB device, you plug in the device with the computer on. Try that. The computer should recognize the device. Try the printer first since you know that was working.

Hi mary,

Thank you for the help.

However the printer is not working either.  I am quite sure there is something wrong with my operating system, just dont know what to do.

When I rebooted I got a system error message and there were two details as follows:

c:\windowsminidump\mini110903-01.dmp
c:\docume~1susie/locals~1\temp\wer4.tmp.dir00\sysdata-xml

Do you have any idea about these?

Dell has a web page that may address your problem:
http://support.dell.com/us/en/kb/document.asp?dn=1062719

You may want to take a look at this thread from another forum.
http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/8407.html

There are a few things that people say have cleared the problem that you are seeing.

You can also go to this forum and read what sramesh2k had to say.  It fixed the same error for someone.

Thank you Bay Wolf for the help on the error messages.  One of the sites you posted had a post where the person had the exact same two error messages as I got.  That is fixed.

BUT, I have done everything on here to get the two USB ports straightened out.  I am running XP PRO on a Dell Dimension 8200.  I have not changed any of the hardware in the computer.

I have periphial hardware which was working ok (HPscanJet6300C and HP Desk Jet970C) until the other day, both stopped working.  The device manager says unknown devices for each port.

I uninstalled all of the in device manager and when I rebooted xp installed the drivers.  So they seem to be ok, it says 'this device is working properly" regarding the ports.

I ran through all of the trouble shooting.

I still cannot get xp to recognize my scanner and printer.  I remember having some trouble in the beginning with them.  I have had to d/l new drivers for both from hp.com.

I have uninstalled the drivers for print and scanner, then d/l the new ones and installed them.  still not working.

I may not be doing this in the right order.  I need some help

Someone said since both ports went out at the same time and that Dell wires them to the motherboard that means my mother board is going.

But I have seen a lot of problems on the net with this.  I hope I am correct in thinking that if it says the device is working properly(usb ports) that there is not a problem with my mother board.

What do you think?

anyone?  thank you.  susie

I found what appears to be your problem description on the HP web site / support by typing in the HP scanjet 6300c product number in the support search bar. Based on the HP solution, you may be a victim of XP initiating power management of the USB hub and your scanner fails to "wake up" when called. The link below describes how to disable power mgmt:

http://h20015.www2.hp.com/hub_search/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=bps05332&cc=us

Let's hope this works.........
