Explorer corrupt? NO Desktop

Question

I recently shut down my PC to change a monitor and upon reboot, no desktop came up.  Got into task manager and was able to start just about any program on my PC that way (and back up any files that I hadn't had a chance to before this! LUCKY ME!)  I couldn't run IE7 or start windows explorer that way.  IE7 would start, but could not find any page I put into the field.  Also couldn't start Outlook.  I can use Firefox to get to the internet, so My PC functions fine.  Is there a dll file missing somewhere?  I even downloaded and installed IE7 again and still no luck.   Any help or hints would be appreciated!    Thanks!

Try this. Once you have booted to your 'No Desktop' Left mouse click on your desktop and then click on 'Arrange Icons by' and select 'Show Desktop Icons'

Left click has no response. I've tried to start windows explorer through the task manager and I see the Start/task bar flicker on for about enough time to see it(if I don't blink) and then it disappears. Everything that uses windows explorer, or IE, won't work. I downloaded the latest version of IE7 and loaded it thinking it would perhaps replace a corrupted file at least for IE, but no luck.

Start the computer in the safe mode by tapping the F8 key at bootup and do a system restore to a date before this problem occurred.

How about 'Right' click?

Tried both.  No history showed up for restore points.
