Explorer doesn't actually rename hard drive

For some reason the name of my C: drive has switched from the default "OS" to "HPLJP1000_1500", and the icon has gone from the nice little drive to the generic not-found icon with the white page and six little micro icons.  When I right-click and select properties, it still displays the name as "OS" in the General tab.  If I change it to anything else, it requests Administrator permission to do so, which I give.  But when I OK out of the properties screen, nothing changes in Explorer.  If I re-open the properties screen, it still has the new name I give it, but again, no change in Explorer.  Changing the name of the Recovery partition of the drive (the D: drive) does work just fine, so I clearly have the administrator permissions set up properly.

Oh, and I have no clue how to change the icon, there isn't even an obvious option in the properties screen for that.

This is entirely cosmetic and not a big deal, it's just ugly and pretty bizarre that Win7 won't do what I tell it.

Yes, the OS is on the C: drive.  The HP printer isn't plugged in; it's a simple laserjet at any rate and doesn't even have a card reader, much less anything so exotic as somehow turning into my C: drive.

I've popped open Disk Management and get the same thing when I try to rename the C: drive there: some lip service that it'll change the name, but then nothing actually happens.

Just for kicks I've uninstalled the HP printer, no help there either.

That's the name of a HP printer. Are you sure the operating system is on the c drive? Win7 doesn't care what the drive letter is. Make sure you don't have any disks in the card reader on the HP printer or in any usb port--thumb drives etc. Open Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Disk Management to see a visual of all the drives on the computer. You can right click on the drives, pick properties and rename them there. Do not rename, add to, backup to or change the Recovery partition or it will not work to restore the factory installed image file.

Edit: Open Devices and Printers to check all your devices. It will not have the hard drive there, but it might tell you something about the printer or other drives.

My C: name can be easily changed using your procedure. Did you try using the RENAME function on the right-click menu? You may need to change the Security settings to allow this change.

Try this link for changing the drive icon: Drive Icon Change

Yeah, the "rename" option didn't escape my notice before I posted.  Explorer's insubordination is even more stark with that option, too -- I write exactly what I want it to be, click out, and it just jumps right back to "HPLJP1000_1500".

I've checked out the security settings and I don't think there's anything problematic there.  I never get a "you don't have authorization" message when I go to rename, it just doesn't do it.

Nothing happens when I use regedit as described in the link to manually change the icon.
