Explorer.EXE Application Error

Hello All:

I have a Dem 8400 whic is a few weeks yold.  I wipped the drive to get rid off all the junk that came pre installed, set up the drive with an extra partition.  Next I did a clean install of XP and installed the nessc. Dell drivers.  So far, so good.

The problem begins when I begin to install my programs, such as Office, NIS, among other programs.  Now things get crazy.   After nearly each install of a program, just as I finish the install, a POP UP msg. comes up on the screen.  "Explorer.EXE Application Error"  It also says,
(oxoeedfade) occured in the application at location ox7c81eb33.        If I hit OK than a smaller box pops up which states:  "Error"  Runtime Error 2179t ????????.  On every occation all the info and numbers are the same except for the very last set.

So, I again, Format and re-partition my drive and do a fresh install of XP.   After installing programs the same thing takes place.  I have been through this a the very least 8 times and I've about had it.

I called Dell and on the first attempt at resolving this the guy had me uncheck a bunch of stuff in the the MSCONFIG area.  This had no possitive effect.

I again called Dell and they now think it could be defective RAM.  So, they are sending out the service guy to not only change out the ram but also the main board.

Does this sound like it would be the problem?   I feel it may be a bad hard drive.  Be advised I have an 80gig Western   SATA Drive.

Any ideas would be very helpful.

Thank you,   Steve

PS:  The above problem ONLY takes place when installing programs.  When using the compter to run just about anything, I have NO problem......................................

This may or may not be related, but I've seen serveral issues lately in the audio section of people having problems after a "clean" install and it turns out the Dell chipset drivers were not installed.

The correct installation procedure for a clean install (after the hard drive is reformatted) is to (1) install the OS, (2) install the Dell chipset drivers (3) install any other dell device drivers (4) the Dell applications software (5) user software.

Hello:

Thanks for your info !

I did the install in exactly the order that you mentioned........................    Still, I have a problem.

Dell is replacing the RAM, MANIBOARD AND SENDING ME A NEW HARD-DRIVE.

I GUESS I'M GOING TO BE STUCK KEEPING THE DRIVE WITH ALL THE DELL JUNK ON IT.

I SHOULD HAVE BUILT MY OWN SYSTEM...................  WHEN YOU BUY A SYSTEM LIKE THIS, THEY SET THEM UP TO WORK A CERTAIN WAY.   THIS COVERS THE PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MAKING CHANGES.  THEY JUST USE A COMPUTER THE WAY IT WAS SHIPPED.
