explorer.exe running at 100%
The other day on boot up my computer was running at 100% mainly due to
the explorer.exe. It seemed to be running ok when I powered down from
the night before. It runs fine in safe mode other than the fact it is in safe mode. So far I've done the following:
the explorer.exe. It seemed to be running ok when I powered down from
the night before. It runs fine in safe mode other than the fact it is in safe mode. So far I've done the following:
I tried just to reboot at first
3 system restores, each at an earlier check point than the last
booted with the last known good configuration
bought spysweeper and ran it on normal and safe mode
ran my anti-virus in normal and safe mode
I did the msconfig and uncheck everything that was starting on boot
I'm starting to uninstall various programs
ran a trojan finder program
Is there anything I else I can do find out what's causing this to
happen?
Thanks in advance,
Jim

What critical updates have you installed recently?

This is getting weird. I've concluded it's not a virus or spyware. The explorer.exe only spikes to 100% when I plug the ethernet cable into the cpu. Has anybody ever heard of that? It doesn't do it in safe mode. I also downloaded a new driver for it and still no luck...
Thanks,
Jim

I was having the same problem, and this may or may not work for you, but this is what I discovered.
I could open My Computer/Local disk where Windows is and try to open the folder I386. A window
would come up with the flashlight searching and it would eventually hang. I could then open
the Task Manager and end the I386 process and the CPU usage would go to normal and
explorer.exe would go to zip. Had to do it after every boot.
My fix was doing an XP repair install and installing all Windows updates. Good Luck.
