Upon further frustration it appears it shuts down just simply using the explorer.exe application in any way. I can be just navigating the directory tree and it will shut down with no other applications open on the desktop.
This is a speculative problem.
Check your event viewer to find the error messages
Start--Settings--Control Panel--Administrative Tools--Event Viewer
and it should be a System Log
I am assuming that you are talking about Windows Explorer and not Internet Explorer[your browser], correct if I am mistaken.
One other thing I noticed is that each set of error logs were preceded by the same two events. 1st was Ati HotKey Poller followed by SNMP and then the three error logs.
Thanks for the clue. I checked the event viewer and found a consistent trio of errors all occurring together. 1st event in string is MSFTPSVC, 2nd is SMPTSVC, and 3rd is W3SVC. Any ideas on what this is about? Thanks

Well from here, the best thing to do would be to search the net for these
e.g.
MSFTPSVC--MICROSOFT
if you dont use IIS then go to
start--run--appwiz.cpl--Add/Remove Windows Components uncheck IIS and continue to remove it.
