MasterStoney,
Would help if you posted model number of Dell which gives error message and the version of Windows XP currently installed.  Have seen similar problems on older Dells running XP with Intel 82801 BA/BAM USB ports.

It's a Dell Deminsion 3000, running Windows XP Home Edition. If that helps.

There are other systems or OS that doesn't automatically recognize USB (that is mostly older systems or older Os versions) that's why when you added/hook up your new HDD thru USB it was not recognized, some USB devices have an installation disk that comes with it for pc's that don't automatically install USB drives.

That's why you were able to use the HDD on your new system without any problems. So you may want to use the installation disk that came with your HDD or you may ask other tech persons you know to help you out with this concern.

Hope I was able to assist you in some way.

You may want to check the manufacturer's website for updated drivers that work with Windows XP.

The insall disk that came with the external hard drive only includes Mac and Windows 98/2000. Everthing else that I plug in is recognized. MP3 players, digital cameras, joystick, video capture device. Thank you for your help.

Yeah, I tried that. No good. They say it doesn't require a driver for Windows 98/2000 or XP. I just can't figure out why it works on one computer, but not the other. They are both roughly the same computer, same age, same OS. I'm baffled. I'm sure that it would be a simple fix for someone more savy than me. Thanx!:smileysad:

Masterstoney,
Specifications for Simple Tech Simple Drive Deluxe indicate that the drive will work with USB 1.1 as well as USB 2.0.  Have you by chance tried a different USB 2.0 cable?  Have you installed a Firewire card in your 3000?  If so, you might try using Firewire.  If you have tried using another USB cable, you might consider downloading the Dell Driver Reset Tool.  It can be downloaded from here:  < ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed / replaced from this post by Dell>
The drive should work with any version of XP.  Let us know if the Driver Reset Tool solves your problem.

I just posted under another category
Have a 4300 with intel 82801BA/BM
purchased /shipped approx dec 2001.
also problem"
with USB to IDE
This is the message:

System info report
(problem devices)
Device PNP Device ID      Error Code
USB to IDE      USB\VID_05E3&PID_0702\6&3A272560&0&01  The drivers for this device are not installed.

when I try to install says they're not there
the Adaptec 2.0  ACSA-120 portable hardrive powers up
I' m running a generic  UH-144 USB hub from about 2002 that is probably 1.1
the computer info does say that the data will be transmitted at slower speed.
Expected that.
But computer of course won't recognize the adaptec.

Hoochbear,

A review of the specifications for the UH-144 USB hub found here: http://www.daxon.hu/Termekek/usb/uh144r.htm indicates that it would not be suitable for connecting an external drive housed in the Adaptec ACS-120 enclosure.  I would recommend that you purchase a USB 2.0 I/O card.  I use such a card in my old Dell 4100. My card has 2 USB 2.0 ports and two Firewire ports.  Purchased at Office Depot some time back for about $75.  I use a generic external USB enclosure similar to the Adaptec ACS-120 to connect notebook hard drives for diagnostics and data recovery.  A five-port USB card is around $17 at www.usbman.com
Hope this info helps.

tgsmith,
I have not tried another cable on this computer, but I do know that the cable and external hard drive work perfectly on another computer. I tried the driver reset tool. No errors found. Thank you.

MasterStoney,
If you have your Windows XP CD for the current version of XP installed on your system; i.e., SP1, SP1a, SP2, do the following:
Insert the CD in your CD-ROM drive.  If it autoruns, close it.

Now, click on Start|Run.  Type sfc /scannow.  Press Enter.  This will verify that all of your system files are of the correct version.  When System File Checker is complete, restart your computer again.  See if you can connect to the USB drive.
