F8 dual boot setup for recovery program Chkdsk

Hello group,

I have a Dimension Laptop 810 running Windows XP professional. Got a Blue Screen error 0X00000024. Windows will not come up in any mode.  All the system checks (F8, F12, FN/ Power switch combo) says all the hardware is OK.

Spoke to Dell Tech support (two thumbs up) and they advise that I need the recovery CD to boot up from and then run chkdsk.  Trouble is that the recovery CD is back at the home office.  I'm on the road.  Once I get the CD, I am confident (hoping) that my problem will be resolved.

However, for the future, is there anyway to "install" the recovery OS (or part of it) as a second selection under the F8 select operating system choice so it would be possible to run chkdsk without having the recovery CD? As anyone that travels knows, it is not always feasible to carry extra CDs.  I know that this will not fix all problems, but it could fix this one in a more timely fashion.

Thanks for your advice.

I doubt it.  I don't think it is a stand alone operating system.  Maybe you could copy the contents of the recovery CD on to a flash drive and boot from that, after setting the BIOS boot options to do that.

If you have room on the machine, you could install another copy of XP Pro in a different directory, but that's a little over the top.  You'd have a dual boot XP Pro / XP Pro, default to the first installtion.  You'd use the second installtion in situations like this.  It's a little over the top, I know.
