FATAL SYSTEM ERROR (cant turn on computer)

I restarted my computer today. A big blue screen came up that said this....

"STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process System Process has been terminated
unexpectedly with a status of Oxc0000096 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down."

I shut it down multiple times and this screen is all I could get. I tried pressing F5 remembering that it did something. I found an option saying "Go back to last known settings"... All I got was a blank black screen instaid of my blue error screen. I restarted again and tried an option saying "Debugging Mode" and I at least got to my login screen!

I guess im still in "Debugging Mode". I'm afraid to restart my computer or touch it for that matter haha. I'm just gonna leave this page up please give me any response possible.

As a side note, I had a virus about a week ago that you guys helped me get rid of with Hijack This. The way that error message is worded, is it possible that a wrong file was deleted, or do you think this is the same virus? Heres a link to that old virus topic I had http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=si_hijack&thread.id=55101

I don't understand anything that site is talking about but I did see the words "Dr. Watson" mentioned... Thats the program I had a problem with on HiJack This. I still don't know what I should do.

I'll agree that the site is a bit on the "techy" side. What it boils down to was isolating the cause of the problem and then installing a good file over an old, corrupt one. Perhaps this site will be of help as long as you have your XP CD: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/ I have looked at the Hijack This log site and, as long as the instructions were carried out, as you seem to have done, there is no reason why this should have caused problems. Another way to tackle the problem will be the Event Viewer. You can find this in Start | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Event Viewer and then open the folders marked Application | Security | System if there are any warnings (yellow or red) in the right hand window, double click them. These will give you Microsoft's idea of what is going wrong. It might be worth doing the above and posting the results here if they are not clear enough for you to solve the problem alone. I will add that the comments that come from Event Viewer divide into three types (1) Those that anyone can understand and (2) those that only the person who wrote them can understand and (3) those that more-or-less say, "No Idea!"

I checked out that event viewer thing.. I have a ton of errors and warnings in the Application and System tabs. Is there certain ones that should stand out?

Unfortunately, there is rarely one particular message that is the clue to them all. I did not expect there to be so many, even if some are mere repeats of others. I'd have to see all of them (other than repeats) to even begin to work out the problem. If it is any help, the Dr Watson program did not actually cause any problems, a virus called Dr Watson Post-mortem was the cause. Someone's idea of a joke :( I honestly feel that your best way forwards is to back up as much as you can from the hard drive and then either use the Dell restore function or an XP repair. For the former, look on this forum under archives for guidance. This will reset your computer to the state it was when it was delivered. It has the disadvantage of your having to up-date windows and all other programs. For a repair, you need an XP CD and follow the instructions at http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm This show in easy terms how to repair XP by reinstalling it over the present installation. The only other way is to grit your teeth and contact Dell Tech Support but I guess, and I may be wrong, that they will advise as above... I'm sorry not to be able to give you a more hopeful reply.
