FAX Boot Attempt on Startup Problem

My Dimension 4600 with Win XP Pro SP3, is attempting to boot fax services upon startup.  I have to do several cancels to get it to accept the idea that I don't need fax service.  I've tried msconfig to see if something in there might be the culprit but honestly, I'm just not savvy enough to figure this one out.  It is really slowing progress here and would sure like some help to resolve this problem.

Thanks, Jerry.

click start, run type in services.msc, click OK or press enter. In the Window that opens, scroll down to fax.  Click on stop on the left (a progress bar will open and close when done). Then double click on fax, to open its properties. in the startup type box select manual, click apply, OK. The fax service should not start on boot again.

Thanks,

Unfortunately, this procedure did not work.  The FAX service indicates Stopped and Manual.

Well, I thought you said you wanted it stopped?

Thanks,

Well....yes, to stop is exactly what I had in mind so I followed your suggestion.  It then indicated that the Fax service was in stop mode and manual.  What I meant by my answer to your previous post is that I did as you suggested but the Fax service is still wanting to load on every startup.  Not a real problem but a nuisance for sure to have to constantly delete the message until it gets the picture that I really don't want it loaded.

Jerry.

The only thing I can suggest is that you download and run (no install necessary) Autoruns from Microsoft sys internals.

It will tell you everything that is set to load at startup, you could then see if anything is asking to load the fax service (possibly some other fax software?)

Do you have a fax modem on you system?

One more possibility, if you don't need the Windows fax at all: Control panel, add/remove, in the left column click on add/remove Windows components. Uncheck the fax services box and follow the wizard.

Scanned for malware lately?

Are you sure the message at boot up isn't for the Windows Fax Console (fxsclnt.exe)  rather than for the Windows Fax Service?  Did you have a failed fax?

Look on Startup tab in msconfig for fxsclnt.exe or something related to Fax Console. Uncheck that box and reboot. Then put a check in the "don't show this again" box which will appear when you reboot.
