(file) could not be opened because an unknown error occurred

Question

The title of this post is the message I receive everytime I download a file! Example: I'll click on a link and start the download. I see the progress of the download in the download manager window.  However, when the the file completes it's download, I get the following meassage:   ' (file name) could not be opened; because an unkown error occurred. sorry about that. try saving to disk first and then open file.'   Well, I often do not get a chance to save it to disk. The bottom of the download manager windows shows the location of the file I just downloaded. However, when I drill down to look for the file in explorer, it is not there. Search can not find it.   If I try to download the same file again, I get a message telling me I've already downloaded the file and will not be allowed to try again, or the same error message!   Any help would be appreciated.  I tried searching these forums, but could not find this same problem.   Dimension 8250 Win XP SP2

Try saving all your downloads to your desktop. This way you will always know where it is.

Thanks for trying to help...but...saving to my harddrive is not always an option.
