fingerprint mouse ms819 stopped working

Howdie all,

 

got an alienware aurora r7 with a dell ms819 fingerprint reader mouse. 

It has worked for a couple of years now. But stopped this week. 

Did a few things at once so not quite sure what is the culprit:

- Bios and other updates via Alienware update (hadnt done that in a year)

- Windows feature update to 1H21

 

did an uninstall and reinstall of latest Dell ms819 fingerprint reader device driver already.

 

I got an entries in Device Manager under:

- Mouse (HID conform Mouse)

- Input Devices (MS819 HID compliant vendor-defined device)

- Biometric Devices (Synaptics WBDI)

 

I can go into Windows Hello and add a new fingerprint. But none of  the swirly fingerprint lines ever stay blue. Upon touching the sensor all go blue for a split second then turn grey again.
