Firewall and Startup issues.

Dear All

After installing SP2 my machine runs well for most of the time, but occasionally takes longer to startup and when this occurs I find my SP2 Firewall has been turned off. Is there anything I can do to correct this? Is there a patch to solve this problem? I am running XP Home and have a broadband connection via a Netgear modem/router. Thank you in advance.

It might help to know something about your specific system model, but, assuming that you have the latest BIOS version installed, and that you have a minimum amount of unnecessary programs configured to run at Windows startup (messengers, etc., none of which need to run at startup), I'd be looking for malware of some sort as a cause for this.  Do you have any P2P apps installed?  That would be the first place to look, but a thorough scan for malware and a thorough virus scan, using up to date definitions is crucial at this point.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I did a full Norton antivirus scan today and it did not detect any infection. I do not have any P2P applications and most of the time my DELL Inspiron 5100 starts up fine. I think the Microsoft Antispyware feature might be a factor - when I turn off the real time checking facility things run much smoother. When the desktop does take a while to load, the Netgear connection seems to be the last piece of software to load.
