fixing paging file

What else can I do to fix the "your system has no paging file..." error that is so persistent, it just happened recently in the past 3 weeks, after running a-okay for 3 months. I'm not able to figure out what changed on my system that would cause this.

I'm running a Dell Dimension 4550, with Intel P4 2.66 GHz CPU , 512 MB RAM, 40gb HD, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, v2002, SP1.

I've tried:

-- changing settings in the control panel > system > advanced... > virtual memory :: custom size, system managed size, even no paging file; none of them seem to "take" after shutdown or reboot

-- tried boot-up in Safe Mode, to login as Administrator, to get at the virtual memory settings, still doesn't take

-- tried to install Intel Accelerator, which resulted the blue-screen-of-death, so I uninstalled that

-- defrag and chkdsk the hard drive to make sure pagefile is not getting stuck on bad sectors or overfragmented HD

your help?

thanks,
djchuang

According to Microsoft, the link below has the fix for the problem you are experiencing.

nope, tried that Microsoft "solution", and that didn't work either. :(

no solution yet, haven't figured it out.. just living with it for now, and hitting the OK button when it tells me I don't have one..

Did you ever figure out how to fix your paging problem?  I have been  experiencing the same thing, and have been unable to fix mine either .

thanks for answering, that is what I do also, lol.  Has it seemed to affect anything else on your computer?

I've found a very unconventional work around, and I'm not sure how risky this is, but here is what I did to get my paging file working again -- any time you edit the Registry Editor, it is very risky - make sure you know what you're doing:

Go to Windows Start > Run > regedt32

Go to the key: My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

Double-click on PagingFiles

I changed the value to "C:\pagingfile.sys 888 888" (no quotes)

Essentially, I renamed the filename for the swapping file..

upon reboot, my paging file is working.
