Is that the only way to do it? I have photos that are not in specific folders and would like to keep the thumbnail view if possible but still do away with this preview feature.
You can apply different views to diferent folders, but the view assigned to a particular folder applies to all the items in that folder.
However, you can change the appearance of a folder image contained in a folder that is in thumbnail view by selecting a picture of your choice. You could therefore create a picture to meet your needs (e.g. if you wanted the folder just to show as a yellow square, you could create that in Paint, or you could choose an appropriate photo or picture you already have).
Right click on the folder whose appearance you want to change (in Windows explorer that would be a folder appearing in the right hand pane), click properties, customize tab.
