Fresh format, Fresh XP install, system software won't install???

Question

hey i recently formatted my inspiron in hope of a new, fresh start.  i reinstalled xp with 'college campus' xp disks (the ones they sell discounted to students) as opposed to the original dell operating system disk.  windows installed fine but when i started extracting/installing drivers etc i discovered that the notebook system software wasnt able to setup.  i got the error 'setup can not run on this machine.'  why would this be? other drivers installed fine.. it is just the notebook software i have trouble with.  could this be because i didnt reinstall with the original dell disk or what?  any ideas? thx aaron

Go to Dell's site and download the latest version of the System Software for your model. Install it on the PC and then try loading everything else.

BTW: Did you reinstall the chipset drivers immediately after loading XP and before loading video driver, then audio driver, then followed by all the others?

hey ron.  ill download the new system software.  as for installing the chipset, video/audio drivers etc i made the mistake the first time of installing everything out of order.  i re-formatted and reinstalled again following that.  this time i tried to follow the process you mentioned by going for the system software first.. obviously a no-go.  figured id get an opinion before continuing.  is it ok to go ahead and install the chipset even tho its second in the process or should i download and install the new sys software first? aaron
