ftp doesn't work

I cannot download drivers or anything else through any FTP site address on my 4-month old 8300 desktop with XP. Either IE6 just hangs for a long time (up to several minutes), then goes to the page not found screen, or the following message appears in a box: "An error occurred opening that folder on the FTP server. Make sure you have permission to access that folder. Details:200 TYPE is now ASCII, 500 Unknown command, 500 unknown command." FTP for the same sites works fine on my wireless notebook and on another desktop running XP, also wireless. What can I do to make FTP work on my 8300 desktop?

In IE/Tools/Internet Options/Advanced there are 2 or 3 ftp-related settings that may need to be 'adjusted'.

as far as settings in ie/tools/options/advanced, i would restore the default settings.. the "ftp" problem is probably due to your firewall rules/settings..

Thank you very much for your help! I checked my settings in IE6/Tools/Internet Options/Advanced and checked Use Passive FTP (for Firewall... compatibility) and now FTP works fine! It must have been a setting in my firewall that was stopping the FTP. Thank you again!
