FTP won't connect.. Tried THREE different ones!

I have installed CuteFTP along with 2 other FTP programs on my computer. None of them work/connect.

I get "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it" from one program, to "Disconnect: Saturday 23:18:32 03-20-2004 STATUS:> Waiting to try again... STATUS:> Connect: Saturday 23:18:34 03-20-2004 STATUS:> Connecting to *** STATUS:> Connecting to *** (ip = ***) EROR:> Can't connect ERROR:> Can't login. Disconnecting..." on another.

Now, I have another computer. An HP with win 95. It has cute ftp on it, with the same exact info i have on the one on this computer, but IT WORKS on the other computer. Both have a cable connection. So why aren't any of them working here?! Does it have anything to do with a firewall? (McAfee firewall + virus programs came with the computer)

Help! :)

inhellfire,

Another thing to check is to make certain that XP's Internet Connection Firewall is not enabled, as it will intefere with the McAfee firewall. Go to Start|Control Panel|Network Connections. Right-click your connection icon and select Properties. The ICF can be enabled or disable on the Advanced tab.

Open the Security Center.  On the left, click on Personal Firewall.  On the firewall, click on the second paragraph in the left column entitled "View Internet Applications....", scroll thru the list until you find your FTP program, then right click on it and select Allow Full Access.

So, if it is the firewall, what do i need to do to get it working?

Thanks BB and Denny.   :)

Giving it full access was actually the first thing i did a while back. I just went in and did what Denny said, and still no go.  Any other options?

Turn the firewall off.  Then try it.  When it works you know there is still some firewall setting that needs adjusting.

FYI for the McAfee firewall.  Disabling it will not affect the programs that are blocked, rather it will not monitor any *new* programs that desire access to the net.

That's why I said Turn it off.  Go in and shut down the McAfee program in the Control Panel.

you could try restoring the default settings in ie, and then "use passive ftp", in ie/tools/options/advanced.

Rick - shut it down, and still nothing.

Red - tried that too, and still nothing. Even kept McAfee off.

I know i'm not doing anything wrong connection wise either. I've used FTP for years and i know the info is right. Very frustrating. Thanks for your help though. :)
