You can buy the upgrade version to save money.  However, if you do, I would still do a clean install and NOT do an in place upgrade.  Clean installs take longer but they ensure a more stable operating system as well as the assurance that the clutter from the old windows is not left on your hard drive.

Just buy the upgrade.

Actually a clean installation will take less time ( due to the image type install ). I have never seen a clean installation take longer than 30 minutes. Every upgrade installation that I have witnessed has taken a minimum of 2 hours and longer depending on how many programs and data is involved.

True my experience also. Perhaps what Scott meant when he said longer, was the time to reinstalled all the software, drivers, files, etc. But it's well worth the time spent then doing an upgrade. Upgrade can cause problems.

Thanks all, I thought this was the case, but when I called in to order the customer service rep said I needed to purchase the full version. There reasoning was that the upgrade was only for lesser version of Vista, and not for any pre existing Microsoft full version OS's i.e XP/ME/2000. They really kind of ticked me off, but when I went to Microsofts website I looked under the version details for Vista, and found that only Home, Home Premium had the wordage that they could be upgraded from XP,ME.2000. Where as Vista Ultimate, and Business just said upgrade requierments may very depending on version. This led me to doubt my first assumptions that I would be able to upgrade my XP Pro with an upgrade version of Vista Ultimate. Thanks again for setting me straight.:smileywink:

When I searched the topic I was not able to find that sight, but you are right that sight does paint the picture black and white. Whish I saw that particular site before hand. Thanks for the input.

I don't understand entirely what you say in the last part, but if you still are wondering if you can't buy the upgrade, go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradepaths.mspx?wt_svl=20427a&mg_id=20427b
There it states clearly that you can upgrade from XP Pro, and if you buy Premium of Home upgrade, you can't do an actually upgrade, but must do a clean install. Just to notify if it's important to upgrade!
