get XP Pro SP2 cd from dell?

When I purchased my Inspiron from Dell, I was shipped an XP Pro Reinstallation CD with Service Pack 1. However, now that Service Pack 2 is out, I'd like to get a CD that has that already on there. I recently had to reinstall the operating system, which required me to first uninstall SP2, then reinstall the operating system under SP1, then install SP2 again, which took a long time. If this happens again, I'd like to just have an SP2 cd so that I can "upgrade" without having to first downgrade.

I know that there is the option of "slipstreaming" but that seems like real hassle and I'm wondering if Dell would be willing to ship me a copy of the CD with SP2 for a nominal price (rather than selling it to me at full price).

Anybody know? Thanks...

Well, I don't know, but I am 99% sure Dell does not offer this option.

If they do, I do not know how to get it done. Probably your best bet to find out would be to call, chat, or email Dell. Let them give you an official answer.

No, you cannot do that.  Further, your reinstall process that you describe above is not correct.  All you needed to do is boot to the SP1 CD, delete everything, then install SP1 and then add SP2.

You can slipstream, or you can update XP from SP1 each time.  No other options.

Well the point of doing it the way I was doing it is that I didn't have to delete all of my applications and data. Booting to the SP1 CD would require that, but "upgrading" from SP1 to an identical SP1 doesn't require that.

Oops, yeah, that's what I meant. I repaired it because I believed some system files were corrupted or missing (and since doing so the system has been fine). Anyway, that's why an SP2 CD would be good, for the purposes of easier repairs.

What you did was REPAIR XP.  You didn't reinstall XP.  Big difference.  Depending on what you wanted to accomplish, it may or may not have the proper effect.  For example, it will NOT remove viruses or malware/adware, whereas a clean install will.

You'll find the slipstreamed CD pretty easy to make.

If you do not have High Speed connection you can order Windows XP SP2 CD from Microsoft for free: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

I believe the free CD from MS is just SP2, not the complete OS, leaving the original poster with the same problem - uninstall SP2, do repair, reinstall SP2....

It's be nice if MS (or Dell) had the complete CD's free if you could prove the validity of your license.

That is correct, the CD contains only SP2. However, for the cost of one CD and thirty minutes' time a user can slipstream SP2 into an earlier version of XP using the procedure here (among many others).
