Ghost 2003 Imaging software questions

I helped my daughter w/the purchase of a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop system running Windows XP. Tomorrow night I have been delegated to set the system up. I want to do an image backup of the HDD in its virgin state and I had several questions abt using the Ghost 2003 software. The system is coming w/a 48X CD Burner and Sonic Recordit software.

1.Will I be able to use the Ghost as a stand alone program,or will I hve to install something like Easy CD Creator to get it to work?

2.Do I hve to do a defrag on the computer as it comes right out of the box before I perform the image backup?

3.What brand of CD/RW disks should I use?

4.I went to the Norton website and it said in its tutorial something abt having to create an emergency back up floppy if the CD the image was created on was not bootable. For ease of restoration, how wud I make the CD bootable w/the image on it?

5.I heard that if you ever had to do a restoration on the system, that you would have to enter some kind of code which is on the side of the tower.I heard that MS set this up to prevent someone from installing the OS on multiple computers. Also that you were only able to perform 3-4 restorations at which time you wud hve to contact MS to obtain another "installation number"?

I wud appreciate hearing from any of you guys who have had experiences along these lines.

Create a System Restore Point and defrag. Enable the XP firewall. Update Windows. Save these files to floppy or CDR/RW: boot.ini,ntldr,ntdetect.com and SYSTEM. You also have the option to install the "Safe Mode" boot option. I'd use Verbatim cds. Your Sonic software is the same as your Roxio Creator SW. Download and update these programs which will help her avoid spyware: Zone Alarm, SpyBlaster, SypSites, AdAware and Spybot. I suggest she only use Adaware but there are some good settings in Spybot that should be enabled Langa.com has good material about what to do with a new computer vis avis imaging(Ghost), etc. To make a real backup of the registry download ERUNT. There is a file that you can save so that you don't have to be concerned about re-activating XP. This is an excellent site for using Ghost

All excellent advice.  If you have further Ghost questions after reviewing the above site (unlikely, it's fantastic), you should post on the Software - Other Software forum.

Note - CDRW are NOT what you should use with Ghost, you need CDRs.
