Going back to XP, Need some help

I purchased an XPS 720 with vista a couple months ago.  I’ve not been happy with the performance of Vista so I decided to go back to XP.   I purchased a new copy of windows XP and have been trying to install it on my system.  I keep getting the same error message when I try to install it.

When the setup starts from the CD its gets to the part where its “Starting Windows” (before the actual install, partitioning etc) and the message

“A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer”

**** STOP:  0x0000007B (etc etc)

I’ve searched Microsoft for this error and it says to contact the manufacturer.  I’ve pretty much tried everything.   I turned off all the devices in the bios, removed the raid to make single drives etc.  For some reason the install just won’t start on my XPS system.   I tried to contact dell but they want to charge me for support at this point.  Has anyone else had any problems going from Vista back to XP on their 720 systems?

Hi
i think i read if you get this error you need to go to the bios and change SATA to ATA
then XP will install others wise you need the chipset drive to install XP at F6
Good Luck.

May I ask a simple question?

Did you reformat your hard drive before attempting to install XP?

I figured out the problem but thanks for the input.  I had to use nlite to create a new windows install disk with my sata raid drivers.  AFter i created the new disk the install went perfect!  No more VISTA!

Hei
I have very same problem just now. I purchased Inspiron 1520 with Vista Home but would like to return to XP.
I have changed the Bios to boot from CD.
Cd boot started and the message came as...
NO HD FOUND
The intallation program cannot recognize the hdd by some reason.
As I understand from your thread I need to shift between SATA and ATA or whatever it is...
You have mentioned about a program.
Could you explain more...what is nlite...

I'd just double check that you have the correct raid drivers.  You can pre load any drivers you want using nlite.  I've been playing with it a bit the last few weeks and have every drivers for my pc on my install disk.  You may want to just install all available raid drivers just in case, windows should just pick up the one that works.

I have the same problem trying to install Windows XP on my XPS 420 with the drives setup as RAID1.  I've downloaded the drivers from Intel, and I'm using nLite to create a system disk for installing XP but it's not working.  Are there other drivers that I need to install, or is there another step that I am missing?

Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I discovered my problem was that I was installing the drivers with nLite as PNP, which Windows didn't pick up.  When I installed the drivers using text mode it worked.
