HAL.dll error not getting resolved using windows XP CD
I have a DELL Inspiron 6000 with Windows XP Professional. While rebooting today i suddenly got an error:
Follwing file is missing or corrupt: \system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file. I searched the forum for this error and the recommended solution seems to be to use the Windows XP CD to recover the file.
I tried the same by changing the boot sequence in Setup (F2 option), making CD the topmost option. Now when booting i get an error:
No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility. Hitting F1 again doesn't help. Why am i unable to boot from the CD?
Please help!!

Sounds like the boot.ini file is corrupt. Read this article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314477
Make sure when you changed the boot order you saved the setting before exiting the bios. Usually you press F10 to save before exiting. You don't replace the hal file yourself. You do a repair when you boot to the xp cd.
