Having problem installing Windows XP service pack 2

Question

I own a xps gen 2. After I reboot to install it, it shuts off during the install process. More specificly when registering it. It also blinks a couple of minute the language support page pops up. I ran the diagnastics and It came up with start DST short test fail. Also on the the read test a couple of blocks were unreadable. The verify test had a couple of blocks it couldn't read either. But other than that everything passed includding the seek test and S.M.A.R.T. Is my hard drive still usable or do I have to buy a new one? Is there a way to fix my hard drive because I really don't have the money to buy a new one? And is that the reason I can't install windows?

Have you run CHKDSK  /F to correct any errors on the drive? Try running that and rebooting to allow it to run.

I am reinstalling windows xp and it won't allow me to go to my desktop. I really don't care about keeping my previous files. Where do access this file? Would it help to just delete everything on the hard disk?

Is there another way I can reboot Windows? Can I do it some how by external hard drive?
