Go to this site: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Read the instructions at the top. Then scroll down to item #235:  Restore Help and Support Service on the left, and download/run the fix.

Joe. Thanks very much for this.

I have downloaded the file. I ran the file and imported the registry entries.

I then tested the Help feature and got an error cannot find 'helpctr.exe'.

I ran a search and found the program in c:\windows\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\ , not in C:\WINNT\.. which the original file suggested. So I checked that the only mention of helpctr.exe was in the first line and amended the filesystem location and reran the import.

I then got the help & support service is not running error. I then "Start -> Run -> msconfig" and the Help and Support service can now be seen in the service tab, but it was stopped. I selected it, unticked it, and then ticked it and issued the Ok command. I was asked the Ok to restart question and agreed.

The system came backup and the F1 invoked the help feature. Hooray.

This may not have been the best way to make this happen. Its possible that the file as issued would have worked if I had rebooted immediately.

The home page of the site you reccommended is http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp.htm
The host page for the registry import file is as you reported ... http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Kelly's Corner has a second resource about this problem on the Top 10 FAQs page ...http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs2.htm

It's possible the "Start -> Run -> helpctr.exe -regserver" is what I required in the first place.

I seem to be working, so thanks to Joe & Kelly.
