Noted that the help function on any item isn't working. eg on my desk top when I hit "help and support" nothing happens
Can this be cured by system restore and will system resore cause problems with documents and downloaded program files
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If that is the only thing that doesn't work, I would think twice before doing a "System Repair". All the features on "Help and Support Page" are accessible by other means. Just my opinion.
When I tried the FIXWINXPHELP.zip I got this message
Run Time error '429'
ActiveX component can't create object
I cannot access help on any other windows product. This is not the only item that doesn't work as I cannot listen to AVERTV USB 2.0 plus which came with my DELL and I have also had problems using a program called "Total Recorder".
Will the repair suggestion effect my program files and documents?
A Repair should be one of the last things you try and there's no guarantess it will fix your problem. To get Denny's script to work I would physically disconnect from the internet first. Then disable ALL startup programs(-esp. MS Office programs-). Do this be entering, from Start|Run, this command:
msconfig
Then uncheck ALL checked boxes under the "Startup" tab. Apply/ok/restart.
Re-run the fix. If you still get the 429 error running the System File Checker may help. Here's the directions for the SFC.
I know there is a fix for your issue; the fact that it shows up in all MS products should make it easier. I think someone had the same problem on this forum some time ago; will try to bring it up.
Yes, I had this problem and fixed it easily with a suggestion from someone in this forum. Trouble is, I can't remember for sure who gave me the solution, but Denny Denham's suggestion sound familiar. So I agree.....don't do the XP repair.
Besides being ubanable to acccess the Dell Help Centre, what are these other help problems you mention, especially the one to do with Total Recorder? It would help to have more details!
Go to start >> Run and type in : helpctr -regserver
Did this nothing happens
Tried to re install Help and Support
Advise said Go to c:\windows\inf\pchealth.inf. Right click and choose install - did this with my XP CD disc in the drive which it says I should have. This asked for dataspec.xml from the XP Disc which runs and seems to down load to my c drive - have shut down and restarted but still no help and support!!
Re the audio problems noted above - basically on AVERTVUSB I cannot hear anything although the volume has been adjusted. Total Recorder is a device I use(d) to record from BBC Radio 4 and 7. It converts to WAV files what I hear for later down load. Simply wehnI record I get no volume and when I adjust the record level I get this meassge
Unexpected multimedia error 7 in the "mixerSetControlDetails(2,[1x],..._VALUE)" function (There is not enough memory available for this task. Quit one or more applications to increase available memory, and then try again.), 1:21:07.062 after system load
Your latest error messages lead me to think this could be a buffer overrun problem which was fixed with SP2.
Give me some answers to theses Q.
Are you running XP Pro ?
Did you install SP2 (without problem) ?
Do you run a registry cleaner, eg Easy Cleaner ?
Is Help and Support set to Automatic in Services 'section' ? To get *there* enter the command:
services.msc
Did you try, with any smaller MS programs, to uninstall the, reboot, and then reinstall them to see if their respective Help functions worked ? Word, if you have it, would be a good one to try this on. Do so and tell me the results.
PS I do suggest at some point you run the SFC to register/replace files. Do this prior to bailing out, ie a Repair Install.
Sorry for the deley in getting back folks - work (don't you love it??)
SP2 is short for XP's Service Pack # 2. I suggest, after running SFC that you run AdAware and install SP2 ASAP. In a week or so SP2, if it's not installed on you system, will be downloaded and installed on your system; this courtesy of MS.
PS Update AdAware before running it; delete all "Critical Objects" it finds.
Make sure you don't already have it installed. Go to Control Panel/Add|Remove. Click the "Show Updates" box; if it's installed it'll say "Windows XP Service Pack 2".
As for the error message I would uninstall your sound card driver, reboot computer and then re-install s.c. driver.
You will probably need to do a repair on your system. Instructions are here.
Also make sure that you are virus free.
Before you do a repair reinstall, see if the little utility here restores Help and Support.
To deal with the Help and Support issue directly (if you can't get past the 429 error) look at these 2 options.
SFC stands for System File Checker; it basically replaces missing or corrupt system files. Directions in this link:
