Help! Can't get into Windows
I'm having a big problem trying to get into my PC(I'm typing this from my old PC). I have a Dell Dimension 4550 and ysterday I turned on my PC and a blue screen came up that said: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps: check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters. Check with yur hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable any BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to disable any components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options and then select Safe Mode.
Technical information: STOP: (0xC0000005,0xF75EOAD9,0xF7982648, 0xF7982348)"
I've tried starting it in safe mode and I have enough disk space. The only other thing that I've installed recently is a DVD-RW drive, but my PC was working fine for a week or so after I installed it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Is there a driver file name in the error message after STOP: (0xC0000005,0xF75EOAD9,0xF7982648, 0xF7982348)?

You can select Safe Mode by tapping F8 many times during startup until Advanced Menu is displayed ,
then use Arrow keys to select Safe Mode or Last Good & press Enter.

I know you mentioned that the DVD-RW you recently installed worked initially, but have you tried removing it to see if you can boot to Window?

If you can't get a fix you might have to use Windows Repair from boot of XP CD.
Set BIOS to boot form CD as 1st choice , start XP Install then select R for Repair from the next screen displayed. (don't select R for Recovery Console)
-----------------
Strange there's no Last ....Good.

It started to load and repair but as soon as it said "please wait while setup initializes your configuration etc." and then rebooted, the same screen came up with the same message. I also tried unplugging the dvd/rw drive but that didn't work either. Any other suggestions? I wonder if it's the software that I installed with the dvdrw-I remember it saying the program may not work correctly due to a conflict with other cd burning software installed. I'm not sure though.

If you tried Advanced menu option "Last good" It doesn't give you a choice to choose from as there is only one Last ...good point saved.
So what do you mean "wasn't any to choose from" . ?
Do you mean you tried System Restore & there wasn't any restore points to choose from.
You could also try Safe Mode , Control Panel , Add or Remove Programs & Remove DVD software if any.
With Repair message you only "Press any key to boot from CD" once , the 1st time & let subsequent messages time-out to Windows setup.
Are you allowing this , you should get message "Press any key to boot from CD" at re-boot.

I can't even boot into safe mode anymore. When it's about to boot into windows safe mode, a window pops up saying that windows cannot boot into safe mode and will have to restart. I tried the system restore and that wouldn't let me either.

Do did answer the above Question ? but anyway if you don't get any other fix method you might have to reinstall Windows XP.
You this link & select XP Home or PRO then method , ie: Used Hard Drive , Multi_Page has text & large pictures of Clean Install.
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/
Use this link for Clean Install of XP , if you click on Pictures they Expand for easy view
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html (Delete existing partition at step 10b for Clean Install)
or use this link ( *** Delete existing partition at step 5 for Clean Install ***)
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp
Clean Install deletes existing partition (like FDISK) & Formats HD during Install of Windows XP from XP CD.
Set BIOS to use CD-ROM as 1st boot device usually by pressing F2 during boot (startup).
Re-start Computer & when message "Press any key to boot from CD" shows do it & let subsequent messages "Press any key...." time out to Windows setup.

I'm not sure if this solution fits your problem; I know it's not exact but it may be worth a try.
