I wonder if it's a memory (RAM) issue?  How much memory do you have?  If you have less than 256Mb, consider upgrading to a least 256 and even 512 is a better amount for Windows XP.    Space available for disk "virtural" memory could also be an issue.  You didn't list your PC model or any specs so no one can specifically address the issue with your specific hardware.

The fonts folder can become very large and it could be causing the problem, if no other folder or nothing else you do with the Windows Explorer causes it to crash.

Reinstalling Windows XP over it'self it not really a "fix".  If there is an XP problem ultimately the only way to permanently fix it is to do a full "clean" restore.  You should have your user data backed up periodically anyway - it's not in case you have to reinstall, it's for "when" you have to reinstall.

I forgot to add:

My system is a 3 month old Dell Inspiron 8600, Pentium M 1.6, 768MB RAM.  There are 208 individual font files in the Fonts folder, for a total of about 50 fonts installed.

You can try running Tweak UI for XP which has a repair font folder function. You can download it here:

I've got that same laptop, too! Well, sort of; it has a Precision M60 motherboard for the extra features. But I digress.

I came here because I recently discovered a glitch in Windows 7 where, if you enter the Fonts folder, and then go to another folder before it's done loading, it crashes. I was interested in it, so I looked it up for answers. This is one of the several places I've been. But this was about Windows XP, not 7.

I'm sorry, I get excited too easily. Have a nice day.
