Help, my desktop icons and taskbar have disappeared....
Old Dimension XPS-R 450 running Windows 98.
I reinstalled my ACS495 speaker drivers because they stopped working, they are ok. However, when I restart my machine, everything seems normal including my Windows networking and user logins. However, the desktop icons do not load, I cannot see the taskbar and right clicking the mouse does not display the context menu.
The mouse is live, and I can cntl/alt/del up the task manager and do an orderly shutdown. I can also hear the Windows startup tune so the speakers are fine....:)
I started up Win 98 in Safe Mode, but the same outcome - no desktop to work with.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be causing this?

Thanks very much. That document helped - the second of the three solutions outlined too care of the problem.
