I am just guessing of course, but I think it is a registry problem because of the msg in the pop up window when I try to install / and or reinstall from my original McAfee disks or a legimitate software program from a trusted site such as Adobe, etc. There are sometime somewhat different words in the blue rim of the msg window, but the msg inside the window says:application or Dll C:\WINDOWS\system 32\oledlg.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskete.
Is there another reason I get this message? What can be done to clear this up?
You could also do a repair install of Windows. That reloads Windows without deleting your data or programs. You would have to reload all of the Windows updates though.
You might want to run spyware and virus scans also.
Thanks for the suggestions. :smileyhappy: I will give serious thought to what you have said. You seem to give sound advice. I have read some of your other help posts for other people. I will read the one you suggested here. Didn't see that one yet.
FYI........ Everything went awry when I downloaded Aug 8 Microsoft patches and said yes to a restart immediately. :smileymad: All was working just fine until then. I am a "Windows Secrets Newsletter" subscriber and I try to be careful about the patches I let download to my computer. They do a "patch watch" column which I try to pay attention to. Sometimes I my timing is off & I do not read the advice until it is too late for me. :smileysad:
I am trying to install Adobe Reader from Adobe website for one. An Adobe tech told me to uninstall the one on my computer which I was getting error msgs on. Then she told me to go back into Adobe site & download full version of Adobe Reader. I could down load it just fine, but it would not install. Same with McAfee....had McAfee tech e-mail me instructions for uninstall of McAfee IS Suite and then I was to reinstall from my original disk, which is less than a year old, and it,too would not install. Each & every time I try to install software now, I get the.......... "oledlg.dll is not a valid windows image" msg. It is driving me nutso! Any ideas shor of wiping off my hard drive and reinstallin EVERYTHING? which I don't want to do?
I did download & install it with no problem. Now how do I get The oledlg file straightened out? I did find the application software in Windows 32\system.......... Been looking around in files and the internet all day. Went to Google and typed in " oledglg software" and got a bunch of references. One in particular caught my eye. The link was to Healthy Computer Club. It gives a free registry analysis and says it will fix the problems (with a $29.95 cost) it finds. It supposedly found 105 problems. I exited and did not want to buy to fix until I knew more...if the program or one like it is legitimate. Do you or anyone else know anything about such programs?
Restore was no help either. Tried several dates. Any more ideas from anyone?

It is not clear what you are doing. Why do you think it is a registry problem?

System restore should restore this file if you have a restore point that is far enough back.
Read here for someone with a similar problem:
