This problem can occur if a downloaded file is corrupt. Erase the file you downloaded and download it again. I recommend www.download.com for downloading programs such as AdAware 2008 and Picasa.
Hey! Thanks for the suggestions Tony! I went into the site that you recommended after removing the prior downloads and tried to download Lavasoft 2008. I don't believe the entire file is down loading but I don't know how to fix that. The estimated time to download was 5 hours and just moments later it was gone. I checked the location it was to download to and it was there. But when I tried to open and run it I got the same error message that it wasn't a valid Win32 application.
I'm lost! Thanks for your help and if you have any more suggestions, I would welcome them!
If you are on a dial-up connection, you might consider having a friend download the files for you on a high-speed, broadband connection and then copy the downloaded files to a USB jump drive or CD. If you get the same error then something is amiss in your system.
On occasion, Adaware will not run properly no matter what you do because of software conflicts. Try Spybot search and destroy. It seems more forgiving, but will not run along with Trend Micro.
Hi Tony! Yes, I WAS able to download Picasa directly from their web site when I disabled the "Star Downloader"
I'm wondering if this could possibly have something to do with my problems with Ad-Aware and I went in to remove it from the system but it's giving me the error message, "Wise Uninstall" Could not open Install.log file.
Give
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware a try from
Here or
Here
Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. I removed Ad-aware on my computers and have been using MBAM ever since.
Yes. Star Downloader could be causing your problem with the AdAware download. Star Downloader achieves its acceleration by splitting the download file into several parts, downloading those parts simultaneously, and then recombining the parts upon completion of the download. Works great with most downloads, but there can be problems with some download mirror sites; i.e., the download doesn't recombine completely. If you watch a download's progress from some download mirrors, you will notice that when the download progress bar reaches 99-100% you will see what looks like another file being downloaded or created. This is most likely a checksum. This I suspect is where Star Downloader creates a problem. Since the download must complete for the checksum to calculate correctly, it is not actually complete until Star Downloader recombines the pieces. The end result appears to Windows Installer as a corrupted download and that is what triggers the error message.
If the MBAM program that Bugbatter recommends doesn't fix your problem and you cannot remove Star Downloader using its Uninstall program or Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, you may have to resort to a "forced" removal of its registry entries by first deleting it in the Program Files subdirectory and then using a registry cleaner such as Abexo Free Registry cleaner which is available from www.download.com.
WARNING: Create a System Restore Point BEFORE trying this little "hack" trick. Also be sure and create a backup of the registry with Abexo before using its cleanup feature. Any time you manually edit the registry or run an automated registry editor such as a Registry Cleaner, you are treading on thin ice. I recommend that you backup all your data files, documents, spreadsheets, music, etc. before running a registry cleaner. Things may go smooth as silk or things may go awry.
I can start the download but it doesn't finish, so I bet you're right on with what the problem is. Since I'm the ultimate novice with a computer can you walk me step by step thru the process of forceably removing Star Downloader?
Hi and thanks so much for your help. I did try to download from both spots you recommended and Star Downloader interfeared. It said it was contacting host but nothing happened after a long delay, so I aborted. At this point I just want to dump Star Downloader off my system. I tried to remove it with McAfee Quick Clean but got another error report and it had to close before the deed was done. Thanks! Piddywid
It looks like you're going to have to go to another computer, download the software that Bugbatter recommended, copy it to a thumb drive or other removable media, and install it on the system that has Star Downloader. It would be a good idea to pursue the possibility that some form of malware is causing your error messages before resorting to a forced removal of the Star Downloader.

Piddywid,
You might want to take a look at these suggestions from Google regarding downloading Picasa from its web site: http://picasa.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=34067
