Help with Multiple OS Install : XP Pro & Windows 7 Pro

I have a Dell E6500 laptop that is loaded with Windows 7 Pro. and a Recovery Image on the same drive in a separate partition. I have recording software that requires XP Pro 32. So I want to install XP Pro on the laptop and be able to toggle between XP and W7. I understand that the earlier version of operating system (XP) needs to be installed first. I have the installation disk and product key for XP Pro. I have copied the Recovery Image for W7 to an external USB hard drive. I am hoping it is possible to install the XP Pro, and then install W7 Pro on a separate partition using the Recovery Image from the USB drive. (note: I do have the product key for Windows 7 Pro) If this is possible, I also have questions concerning whether making my USB recovery partition "active". Thanks, T

I wouldn't bother installing XP Professional as a separate partition.

I would suggest virtualisation. Windows 7 professional has the license for XP Mode.

XP Mode is however a bit slow. VMWare player is much better:

You can install XP in it using your separate license.
