help with sound problem on windows xp

Question

i h ave a demension 2400 and i wanted to have the icon for the sound on my taskbar when i went into sound to click on the part to have it on my task bar it says windows cannot display the volume control icon on task bar because the program has not been installed? that is wierd i have sound and it seems to be in the program to me? help
