It sounds like a failed installation if you received a registry error during installation. Your best bet is to do another reinstallation. See this.

Ok. Here's the deal. Registry Error which is BSOD 0x00000051 or 0x000000218 will not be simply resolved by atempting to just reinstall XP. I suggest first run a diagnostics on the hdd and then follow the instructions below:
1. Boot through the dell dimension resource cd. You will get to the A:/>. The type the following lines accurately:
( the lettering in pink wil appear automatically. Dont need to type that. (enter) is to hit the enter key on the kb).
A:/>debug
-F 220 L1000 0 (ENTER) <---------- Remember space between F and 200 and not between L and 1000)
-A CS: 100 (ENTER)
xxxx:0100 MOV AX,301 (ENTER)
xxxx:0103 MOV BX,200 (ENTER)
xxxx:0106 MOV CX,1 (ENTER)
xxxx:0109 MOV DX,80 (ENTER) <---"80" for hd1, "81" for hd2 >
xxxx:010C INT 13 (ENTER)
xxxx:010E INT 20 (ENTER)
xxxx:0110 (ENTER) <-------BLANK LINE "VERY IMPORTANT" >
-G (ENTER)
Program terminated normally
- (CTRL)-(ALT)-(DEL) to reboot system
