You have two choices. Go to Start|Run, enter sfc /scannow and click OK and System File Checker will replace any missing system files or open Windows Explore and go to C:\Windows\system32\dllcache, copy rstrui.exe from there and paste it into C:\Windows\system32\Restore.

Do you mean it is not in the dllcache folder? If that is the case you can replace it there by extracting it from your XP CD. Place the CD in the drive then to to Start|Run, enter cmd and click OK. At the command prompt enter the following, substitituting the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive for x:
expand x:\i386\rstrui.ex_ c:\windows\system32\dllcache\rstrui.exe and click .
(There is a space after ex_ and you should see a message that the file was expanded.) Once the file is in dllcache, copy it to C:\windows\sytem32\Restore.

I tried the above because rstrui.exe is missing and the dll cache folder is also missing. The computer doesn't recognize my CD for reinstalling utilities. A search doen not find the Owner's manual from which i am supposed to be able to do a PC Restore. What can i do to get back the .exe file?

SharonFalk, you need to start a new thread, not add on to a 6 year old thread. Include your PC Model Number, Operating System when you repost.
