How do I dump an update?

I have Windows Updates set to automatically download new updates. Now I have an update that I'd rather not install, however, I keep getting the "updates are ready to install" message and when I shutdown I must click a special link to keep the update from automatically installing. I don't want to do a system restore. Is there another way to get rid of that annoying update?

Thanks.

This is one of the reasons I choose to do all of my P.C. updates manually.

You can open Microsoft's update website. Select the update in question and put a check in the box that says "Don't Show This Update Again", this will hide the update, and I don't believe you will be notified about this update again, unless you click to restore it.

I thank you both for your replies. Actually I accidentally found the solution to my dilemma on a site which I recommended to someone else for a different problem. Here it is in case anyone needs it:

SOLUTION: Click Start, click Run, type SERVICES.MSC, click OK. Stop the Automatic Updates service. Rename the c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder to c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.old. Restart the Automatic Updates service.

Thanks again,

If I did not want automatic updates, I just right-Clicked "My Computer", properties, and the Automatic Updates tab. And clicked "Turn off automatic updates" OK.

If I get the red shield, I just configure Security Center (in control panel) not to alert me that Automatic Updates are turned off.

But whatever works for you!! ;)
