How do I uninstall Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant?!
I ran this utility prior to installing windows 7. Like everybody here, it prompted me to delete the WLAN utility, which I did. I did the upgrade an now the OS is working just fine with one exception. Every time I start up the Upgrade Assistant pops up telling me that the WLAN utility can not be deleted. I tried the uninstall utility in the control panel and yet it remains.
How do I remove that pesky utility now that I don't need it?

John60048,
I'm still trying to track down the specific registry entries for the Dell Upgrade Assistant, but am coming up blank so far. Take a look at this article, though, and see if it helps at all (the steps are for XP, but may work in 7).

John60048,
Thank you for contacting the Dell Community Forums. If you tried uninstalling the Upgrade Assistant from the Control Panel but are still getting pop-up messages from it, it'll probably take a registry hack completely to remove it. Not sure what registry keys are associated with the Upgrade Assistant, but am trying to find that out. In the meantime, if you want to stop the startup prompts you should be able to disable the Dell Upgrade Assistant in msconfig, under the Startup tab.

Excuse me for butting in here John, but you should be able to get rid of it using a (free) program called Revo Uninstaller :emotion-55:
Even if the install log can't be found - or is broken... Revo Uninstaller offers the option to 'Force' remove stubborn programs!
As you'll find out when you run it for the first time... it's much more than an uninstaller. It also includes a number of useful secondary options in the 'Tools' menu :emotion-11:
Try it anyway, and let us know how you get on/if it was successful :emotion-5:

I have the same problem. Every time i turm on my pc the Upgrade Assistant pops up. I have gone uninstall process via the Contol Panel but it does not seem to go away ! I note you are suggesting disabling it via msconfig.I am not too "IT savvy" and wonder if you could post a step by step guide as to how to do this as i am sure there are many people with the same problem. Many thanks

It's pretty simple really. In windows 7, click the Windows logo/Start button in the lower left corner of your screen. Your cursor should then be in the search field. Type "msconfig" (without the quotes) and hit "enter". A System configuration window will pop up. Click the tab labeled "Start up". There will be a list of programs that launch at start up. Find the one that refers to the Upgrade Assistant program and uncheck it. Shut everything down and reboot. The assistant program should not pop up. It worked for me.
This does nothing to remove the remnants of this application. I'm still waiting for instructions on how to completely remove this from my machine.
Dell, are you listening??

John60048,
I apologize for the delayed response. I've searched our internal knowledge base, but haven't been able to identify the specific reghack for removing the Upgrade Assistant. I'm currently trying to get hold of a copy of that software so I can test it myself, but we don't have one immediately available. Just out of curiosity, what problems did you have when you tried the manual uninstall process from the Microsoft KB? Was the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall key not there?

This is what I did:
*Important: before continuing, go back to System Config and RE-CHECK the box for the Upgrade Assistant
if you have already unchecked it. This will maintain a key in the Registry.
Then, in Windows Explorer, browse to C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Local
Delete the folder called DellWin7Upgrade
Then Run regedit, browse to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Delete the key for the Upgrade
You may need to restart your machine after this.
It's gone for good now.

Thank you very much for the assistance. However, this didn't work for me.
There is no folder on my machine named "AppData" when I follow the path C:\users\MYNAME\...
I did go back and recheck the Assistant in the msconfig start up options.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

I forgot to say that the folder called appdata is Hidden, so either you can go to folder options in control panel,
click on the View tab, click the radio button for 'Show hidden files, folders, and drives'.
Or manually type in the address in the address bar in windows explorer
Did you notice I made some amendments to my original post? The first instructions were a little unclear.
Hope that helps, Drake.
