How often should I run CHKDSK?

Should running CHKDSK.exe be part of a regular Windows maintenance (like disk defragmenting) or it should only be run when having trouble? If it should be run regularly, how often? Thanks.

Only if you get an error message stating you need to run it, in my opinion.

In my opinion, running CHKDSK about once a week is preventive maintenence. My computer tends to get a lot of "orphaned" entries, which sometimes leads to being unable to delete a file, or even if the file is deleted, the icon stays behind.

If you don't tend to have problems like that, you can get by doing it once a month, or longer.

Thanks everyone for their views on this. There seems to be no definite answer to CHKDSK. For some reason I believe that running CHKDSK is like running those reg cleaner programs (TweakNow, Norton Systemworks, etc), and in my opinion they slowly degrade the OS stability. In this respect I believe CHKDSK is the mildest of all, as it's part of the OS.

I run CHKDSK  once a month. It's part of regular routine along with weekly disc clean up , defrag and anti-virus scans.

Tweaknow is alittle somewhat harmful in my opinion I only use chkdsk At least on some uninstall occasions and when something wont delete as stated above or I have a registry problem. Use CCLEANER to fix alot of that and I have instructions on my website that can help you go through it. If you dont understand ask here.

Pardon me if I'm wrong, but isn't Freewebs a website that can put spyware on your computer?? That's what I've heard.
