How to disactivate, remove - Windows Messenger

Hello,

How can I remove/disactivate Windows Messenger?  I don't need it all and it opens and puts icon on my taskbar whenever I click on the main Oulook Express folder in OE 6.0.

Besides, as far as I recall, there are serious security concerns with Windows Messenger.

Thank you for any advice!

Liche,

That's how to disable Messenger Service, which is not the same as Windows Messenger (on my machine, I've disabled both).

To disable Messenger Service, use the instructions above.

To disable Windows Messenger, use the instructions found here:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_messenger.htm

Or to completely remove Windows Messenger:

Go to Start / Run / type in SERVICES.MSC and click OK.

Scroll down to MESSENGER and double-click it. Stop the service then set the drop-down box to "disabled"

The messenger service is used for administrators to send popups on networks (and abused by spammers also, which is why it is a good idea, if you are not on a network, to disable the service). However, it has nothing to do with Windows messenger.

To stop Windows messenger from running, see

You can also go to add/remove windows components, uncheck Windows messenger.

Don't forget to clear the box in Outlook express (and the one in Office Outlook if you have that), as instructed in the link, or they will be very slow to start. See also
