How to get new Windows CD

Hi all.

Few days ago, I received as a present a Dell laptop computer. This was used by a relative and he gave it to me without anything but the power cord and cds.

Since computer is in pretty bad shape I need to reinstall the os and all the drivers. The problem is that when I use the CD he gave me, I receive an error, windows tells me it can't copy some files because they are corrupted.

Now I don't have any customer code or purchase code for this laptop, how can i ask for a new copy of the installation disks?

Thank you

Andrea

Hi jpsisko

You need contact Dell in Italy to help you

Well, thank you for your help.

the problem is though, that I am in Italy, so I don't think I can ask for help to Us support, and I can't find a similar page in the Italian support center.

The service tag for the notebook will be on a narrow, white, barcoded sticker on the bottom.  You will also want to do a transfer of ownership so the system is listed in your name.  Doing this will make sure you get full use of any remaining warranty on the computer.

As for the problems you describe: does the Windows CD need to be cleaned?  I've found that by wiping a CD from the center towards the outer edge you can usually fix a lot of "could not be read" errors when trying to read from a CD or DVD.  This won't fix most scratches, but for smudges or finger prints  this usually does the trick.  Just make sure to use something soft like cloth, and not something that could scratch the disk further (like paper towels ... too bad I had to learn that part the hard way).

The other posters suggestions for contacting Dell's European support group are the way to go if you need to get the disk replaced.

Once you have a working OS CD, and have found your service tag, you can get the full list of available drivers and updates for your computer from our support website
