How to make mp3 files

Hi,

I want to put mp3 music on a SD card so I can play it in my new Garmin GPS.  But all my music on my pc is wma.  Is there a way to do it w/ Windows Media Player 10?  Or do I have to rip all my cds again into mp3?

It'd probably be better to just re-rip them.  Even if you could re-encode them, the quality would probably leave something to be desired.

A lot of mp3 players will play unprotected wmas -- I take it the Garmin won't?

On another note, I was really thinking about buying a Garmin 750 -- what model do you have and do you like it?

Yeah,  I tried my sd card w/ music from my sansa mp3 player.  But it wouldn't play on the Garmin.  I looked at it in my pc and the files on it were wma.

I just got the Garmin nuvi 650  at Best Buy online for $299.99.  That's like 1/2 price.  The guy at the Best Buy store said it's being discontinued that's why it's a low price.  Oh,  I just saw it at I think MegaGPS for $269.  We love it.  Go to Garmin.com  There are 40 (count em) models!

Cool ...  the only real difference between yours and the 750 I was looking at is that the 750 will let you pre-program in routes and also handles multiple destinations better.

Windows Media Player should also be able to rip to MP3 if you tell it to

Don't delete them yet.  I asked some others for advice on this.  Worst case you might try moving (and perhaps later deleting) a single song first...

It's not the most friendly program to remove (and I have never tried to).  Here's a microsoft link:

What if anything is showing on the 'Rip' tab?

On the Rip Tab it says....Ripped to Library.  Guess I'll have to delete the wma files so I can rip them again to mp3.  Can't have them in both formats?  Guess I'll learn my way around 11.

HELP!  I tried to re-rip my cd in Windows Media Player 10 but couldn't find an option for mp3.  I thought I had read in the help that it could do it.  It said there was an upgrade for 10 so I did it.  I DIDN'T WANT v11!!.  Now I've got v11 and I don't like it.  How do I go back to 10?  Anyway in 11 it looks like I can rip to mp3, but how do I re-rip a cd if I already have it ripped to wma on my pc?  I set the options to mp3 and selected all the songs and said rip but nothing happened, probably becuase it already said it was ripped.

I've been using Audiograbber to encode mp3s. Now that I have Vista, haven't tried it yet.

You can also try Audacity

Volvogirl, I was able to revert back from Media Player 11 to Media Player 9. That was what was installed originally in my computer. From there, I updated to Media Player 10. There is a few steps to the process but it can be done and I think well worth the effort to get rid of Media Player 11 (talk about Big Brother)

Do a search on this forum and you will get the info you need, Mostly from Microsoft, They have an uninstall procedure.

Good Luck

I guess I like WMP 11.  I'm figuring it out.

I figured out I AM able to re-rip to mp3 without having to delete the wma files first.  Just had to select all the songs and click the start rip button.  But I guess I can't convert my existing wma to mp3 in Media Player, have to have another program for that.

I thought MP3 was the smallest size?  Or is it the wma file type?  One song is 5000 kb in mp3 and 3994 in wma.  What is the best settings for mp3 to get the most files on a SD card to play in my Garmin GPS?

If the garmin is using an FM transmitter to get the music to the car's radio then high quality isn't really necessary -- while I normally rip at 192, 128 would likely be fine for your uses.

Variable bitrate would be another alternative (the bit rate changes based on a given part of the song to optimize space vs. quality) but I'm not sure the Garmin supports it.

The lower the bit rate, the smaller the file size of the MP3

128kbps is a good bit rate for most people, if you want better quality of MP3 use 192kbps.

Wma actually has a better sound quality for its size than MP3.

The smaller the mp3 file size the lower sound quality it will be.

To NemesisDB...This Garmin is giving me bigger problems.  I've figured out that when I put a sd card into it with music or pictures, then put the card back into my E520 built in card reader the reader light doesn't even come on and the card isn't recognized as even being inserted.  I think the Garmin is doing something to the card.  I have to RESTORE to an earlier time to reset my card reader.

I've spent 2 days restoring, trying my sd card, restoring again, etc.  This last time I restarted instead of restoring and got a brand new screen which I'll ask about here instead of starting a new thread in the xp forum.  What do I do here?

Hardware Profile/Configuration Recover menu

If your system is not starting correctly, then you may switch to a previous system configuration.

Only 1 selection is listed.....Profile 1

To switch to the default configuration Press D

To exit this menu and restart press F3
