How to remove auto launch programs at startup?

I'm trying to help a friend who's Dell laptop takes forever to startup. She uses Window XP and has a large number of icons in the quick launch toolbar at the bottom of the screen. When the computer was new (and didn't have all those programs), the startup process was very quick.

I've run msconfig.exe, but I really don't know what to do. Which boxes do I uncheck? The names are so criptic that I really don't know what programs they are related to.

In searching this forum, someone recommended a free download "RegCure" at

I'm hesitant to run unknown software and make the situation worse.

What are my best options to get rid of these autoloading programs?

I'd appreciate advice from someone who has successfully dealt with this problem.

Thanks,

- Simon

You can take them out of start up using msconfig

If you want to delete the programs all together, go to add/remove programs in Control Panel and uninstall them.

Sc,

since you've already run MSCONFIG, I take it that your question is not HOW to remove a startup entry, but rather, WHICH ones should you remove.

you can research startup items, individually, at sites such as:

Type-in the name of the program you want to check-out; or click on its first letter.

and/or

Click on first-letter of program name
