How to use Adobe 8?

Hello All.
I'm a relatively new computer user, but I've been getting to grips with it, and have found myself more capable than I would have expected.
Part of the learning process now, is finding and using new programmes (please excuse the spelling - I'm English!).
On Friday, I was invited to update to Adobe 8, and was given Adobe Photoshop as a bonus - lovely programme it is, too.
Now, I know that one requires Adobe to read PDFs, but this new one says that I can create my own, as well.  As far as my experience goes (not far - it's not even allowed to cross the road on it's own:smileyvery-happy:), PDF seems to be either manuals, i.e. Dell Support Centre Owner's Manual, Norton etc., or things like Government documents/Acts.
I would be very interested in learning how to create my own PDF(s), and what kind of thing I would be likely to use this programme for.  I think I'm right in saying that Photos and other graphics can be added, but have yet to see this kind of thing on existing PDFs.
The Help site seems to be aimed at people who at least have a vague idea of how to go about this, but I really do need someone to explain its purpose as s..l..o..w..l..y as possible.

I downloaded Adobe 8, however whenever I try to open a PDF document, it always opens in Word Pad. Did I do something wrong? Can this be corrected?:smileysad:

dcondiff, right click on any pdf file and choose "open with", choose adobe 8, you may have to navigate to the program folder and find the adobe 8 program executable if it does not show up in the choices given. Tick the box "always use this program to open this kind of file" hit OK

Thanks for the idea. I did try that, however it automatically converts to a html, it's not giving me a choice to do "save as". It's quite strange. Any other ideas?

Adobe 8 is an ambiguous decription.

I take it you mean Adobe 8  reader. Version 8, which is free (and includes Adobe photoshop Album starter edition if you check that box in the download page; but don't confuse that ultra lite version with Photoshop, which is an expensive but excellent photo editing programme.).

I think that Adobe is misleading you somewhat about what you can do with the reader.

For almost all pdf files that you will encounter, the Reader can do just that, read the file. Version 8 of the reader does have a link to access an on line service (at subscription cost of $100 per year, first 5 files trial for free) to convert documents such as Word files, to pdf format. But there are simpler and cheaper apps that can do that without you having to upload files onto the internet.
Adobe Reader version 8 also offers the possibility for the user to edit certain pdf files that have been specially created to allow it, for example to allow the recipient to fill in a form or add comments. I have only ever encountered one such a file, maybe they are used within some corporate environments.

Then there is Adobe Acrobat 8 (in different flavours) which is an expensive piece of software, but is the one that can create pdf files from scratch.
