The next question is what HP Photo imaging program do you have? If it's one that you used on an old PC, is it Vista compatible? If it's an older program, check with HP to see about compatibility and/or if they have an update to make it Vista compatible.
How to crop, etc in a specific program is not a Vista issue and you should really be directing those types of questions at HP, since it's an HP program. www.support.hp.com
But, Vista is not dramatically different than Windows XP. I'm retired but still do part time PC support and almost all of my clients are also Florida retirees and none of my clients that went to Vista are really having any problems - in fact they all like it better than XP.
To answer your question about manuals. That is mostly a thing of the past. The Help files in programs or the Help and support in Vista is where you now go to find out how to do something. Or, do a search using google and many questions can be found. There are 3rd party books that you can buy if you want printed documents. But, a Vista book would still not tell you how to do things in the HP program you would need a book on that HP program if one is even available.

Try using just Vista to crop and open pictures.
Right click your picture and go to open with and then go to windows photo gallery.
(Can change this as default program if you want, you will see in the menu, change default program below windows photo gallery)
While a very basic program
If you go to fix on the top of the window, it will gove you the option to
crop
fix red eye
adjust exposure
adjust colour
auto adjust
At the bottom the option to rotate left and right (90º) are there. However if you have Microsoft office picture installed, you should also hae microsoft office picture manager and this program allows you to rotate to an accuracy of 0.01º. If you are wanting to do more you can open it up with paint but again paint is only a very basic drawing program. However for the needs you dexcribed I think Windows photo gallery will do you.

There may be a link in the start menu.
Go to the start button (bottom left) then go to all programs and then either a HP folder or a Hewett Packard Folder and see if there is any uninstall there.
For example I have HP > HP Photosmart Essential >Enable HP Improvement Program, HP Photsmart Essential and uninstall.
