I dearly want to return to XP.

How do I re-format? I've got the Dell version of Windows Vista. My XP-pro CD does not have a reformat option. Any help would be appreciated!!!

If you have a true XP Pro CD it does have an option to wipe the drive and install it. Boot from the CD, then when asked where to set up the OS select the Vista partition and tell it to delete it... Then create a new one for XP in the space.... so on.

This sounds like a RAID Controller issue, even though you may not be using a RAID if you have a RAID controller you may still have to set it to off or auto detect in the BIOS.

If your machine has raid, you will have to disable it in setup or XP will not install, I had that problem with an XPS410. Make sure the machine is set up to boot from CD ROM, put the disc in the machine and restart to install XP. Make sure you have XP drivers for your computer hardware as vista drivers will not work with XP.

Turn on the PC with the XP Cd in the drive, then press F12 to get a one time boot selection menu. This will not change the boot order but it will allow you to boot from the cdr drive. Then proceed to wipe out Vista partition and install XP.

You cannot run " setup.exe ". You will have to insert the XP CD in the drive, shut down the computer and then boot from the CD rom Drive...

mombodog,

Thanks for the link, but Windows Vista does not let you install an "older" OS (XP) on top of a newer one (Vista).

Ah, I see. I've got to break for dinner, but will look-up how to change the boot-drive in Vista. (Shutting down the PC and restarting with the XP CD doesn't work, as you probably know).

I was surprised it launched that setup stuff first. I was hoping it would give me the standard XP menu first.
